Getting social with Nicki

Beach Time – Port Beach

What better way to take on the celebrated Western Australian sunset than atop a board with the sea breeze in your hair and the water at your feet! Nicki organises regular social SUP sessions at different locations and times of the day, around Perth. Depending on the weather conditions, this could be a sunset ocean paddle at Port Beach or a morning river session at the Swan Yacht Club in East Fremantle. The sessions are posted on Facebook and Instagram. You will need some standup paddling experience. Everyone is welcome.

It just goes to show that age is no barrier. This youngster was out on the ocean with mum. He even helped her paddle with his blue plastic beach spade!

For some paddlers these social sessions at the beach are the first time in the ocean. The smiles at the end, when people carry their boards out of the surf, say it all. Sometimes conquering a perceived fear is best done in the company of others.

Safety in numbers. Getting out onto the ocean is sometimes just mind over matter. Taking the first step is quite often the hardest.

River run

Fancy a river paddle? When it comes to waterways, Perth is spoiled for choice! The Swan River is a diverse waterway with abundant wildlife. The Swan River bottle-nosed dolphins have been seen as far up river as Bayswater and are regularly sighted frolicking in the waters of Freshwater Bay and Bicton. The Bottle-nosed dolphin pod of at least 20 dolphins that reside in the Swan and Canning River systems are unique in that they only inhabit the river and do not venture into the ocean.

Fresh Water Bay is one beautiful river location where Nicki holds SUP lessons with her business, Perth Standup Paddle School as well as regular social paddle opportunities.

10k Her Way

10 K Her Way was Australia’s biggest female-only virtual SUP event. Held in the final months of 2020 during what had been a difficult year for some Australians, due to lock down and restrictions.

Nicki Jones hosted this great social event in Perth and had a great response with women signing up and taking part in 4 separate paddle sessions in different locations in Perth.
