Flatwater Racing vs Downwinders

When choosing the right race board, there are some differences for flatwater racing versus downwinders. Good boards for downwind SUP racing tend to have more volume or rocker in the nose to pop over waves. Flatwater boards tend to have less rocker to maximise waterline length.

If you can only buy one SUP race board, there are some fast all water options. These suit races like the Doctor, where you might have to race in both flat water and downwind conditions. Best boards include the Sunova Unlimited Faast Pro (best for ocean conditions) and the Lahui Kai 12'6 (on sale).

If you do want to get an edge over your competitors, the major brands do specialised boards for either flat water or downwinders. The fastest flatwater race boards are the Sunova Flatwater Faast Pro. For downwinders like King of the Cut, the Sunova Ocean Faast Pro or the SIC F16 will give you the best chance of crossing the line in first place.

Just come in and have a chat and we’ll get you on the fastest board.

SUP Race Board Design

We've got some of the fastest SUP race boards for Western Australia's conditions. Fast SUP race boards are generally long, slender and light. They look very different to other stand up paddle boards. A narrower hull allows the paddle to pass closer to the center line of the board, making each stroke more efficient and more balanced. And a slender hull produces less wave drag, which also makes you faster. However, the narrower the board, the less stability and buoyancy so you do need some experience to use these boards.

If you want to go top end, the ultimate ride in terms of weight, speed and manouevrability will lead you to a specialised Carbon construction. This gives strength, lightness and stiffness.

SUP Race Classes

12'6 and under: These boards are generally used for in and out of the surf style races known as Tech or Bop racing. This is a very limited class in WA due to our surf conditions.

12'6 - 14': The most popular class in Western Australia and internationally. This size board allows you to downwind, race on the flat and catch runners.

Unlimited: The ever growing category for people who just want to enjoy downwinding but don't want to upgrade their boards every year. Boards in this category are generally 16' or more and often come with steering systems to allow you to link runners more easily.
